CYBL 8th Grade Boys Travel "Maroon" Team Game Summaries
Chelmsford "Maroon" 52
Nashua 37
Andover 42
Chelmsford "Maroon" 38
The Chelmsford 8th Grade Boys Maroon Travel Team split weekend
games against a pair of highly ranked Merrimack Valley opponents,
by defeating Nashua at home on Sunday after losing an epic battle
at Andover on Saturday.
In Saturdays game against Andover, the Chelmsford boys played
tremendous defense and had several opportunities to pull out
a victory but simply could not outlast the first place Andover
boys. Neither team ever led by more than 5 points in the game,
with Chelmsford actually leading throughout most of the first
half. Unfortunately, Andover hit 6 straight free throws in crunch
time to win the game by 4 points. Leading the way for Chelmsford
were Colby Emanouil with 16 points, Sam Wong with 8 points,
and Brett Harrington with 6.
On Sunday, the Chelmsford team avenged an early season loss
at Nashua, by dominating the Nashua boys from start to finish.
Chelmsford jumped out to an early 7- 0 lead, and never looked
back behind 12 points each from Sam Wong and Colby Emanouil.
It was another superb defensive effort that carried Chelmsford
to the victory, with a season high 19 team steals by Chelmsford.
The all around strong defensive effort was led by Wong and Matt
Coughlin who had 10 rebounds apiece, and Emanouil and Bobby
Khirallah who had 6 steals each. Along with the leading scorers
Wong and Emanouil, other players adding to the scoring column
for Chelmsford included Brett Harrington, Corey Everleigh, Coughlin,
Eddie Sheridan and Khirallah. This complete defensive effort
bodes well for the 8th Grade Maroon travel team as it enters
the second half of its regular season schedule next week.
Grade 8 Boys (Maroon)
Andover “Blue” 43 - Chelmsford “Maroon” 17
In their second game of the young season, the Chelmsford Maroon
8th grade travel boys basketball team ran into a very talented
and tough Andover Blue team at McCarthy School Gym. Although
the Chelmsford team started out with a high intensity defense
for the first 12 minutes of the game, the overall depth of the
Andover Blue team wore them down late in the first half leading
to a 19-9 halftime deficit for the boys in maroon.
Leading the way for Chelmsford was Sam Wong, who had a team
high 5 points, to go along with 8 rebounds. Colby Emanouil chipped
in with 4 points, and Tim Joy had 7 rebounds in a solid defensive
effort. The Chelmsford boys did take away a couple of important
lessons in the defeat, so the game was not a total loss. They
learned that they must work better as a cohesive unit and not
try to take the game into a one-on-one format.
Also, they were able to observe a very good Andover set offense
during most of the game, and recognize that players CAN be freed
for wide-open easy shots if such a half court offense is executed
properly. When the Chelmsford boys are able to execute such
a well planned half court offense, and not lose defensive intensity
at the same time, they will become a force to be reckoned with.
